Statutory review of the Gender Equality Act 2020
The Victorian Government has published its response to the 4-year review of the Gender Equality Act 2020.
The review looked at how effectively the Act is contributing to gender equality. It also considered if the Public Sector Gender Equality Commissioner is implementing the Act as intended.
The Gender Equality Act requires the Minister for Women and Gender Equality to cause a review of the first 4 years of the Act’s operation. In 2025, independent agency, Cube Group, conducted the review.
The Commissioner made a formal submission to the review. The Commissioner’s submission highlighted the Act’s potential to drive lasting change. It showed how the Act has been rolled out and how organisations have worked to meet their obligations.
The review’s final report was tabled in Parliament on 27 August 2026.
The review found that:
- the Act is effectively contributing to gender equality
- the Commissioner is implementing the Act as intended.
The review made 5 recommendations to further improve how the Act operates. The government supports one recommendation in full and four recommendations in part.
The Commission will work with the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing to implement the recommendations supported by the government.
