Towards a gender-equal Victoria for everyone

The 2024-25 Impact report(opens in a new window) demonstrates the reach of our unique regulatory role. We oversee the Gender Equality Act. We drive workplace change to improve gender equality.

The past year has marked a turning point for the Commission for Gender Equality in the Public Sector. We have moved from establishment to embedding best practice as a modern regulator. This new phase sharpens our impact in reducing the harms caused by gender inequality.

Inspiring change through best practice regulation

In 2024-25, the Commission:

  • engaged with hundreds of duty holders and stakeholders to build understanding of gender equality
  • delivered detailed compliance feedback to help all duty holders improve their reporting
  • published detailed guidance and resources to help duty holders meet their obligations
  • shared comprehensive data and insights to support research, policy-making and evidence-based practice
  • advocated strongly for systems and policy change to improve gender equality.

5 years of the Gender Equality Act

The Gender Equality Act came into effect in 2020. Since then, Victoria has led the way in making gender equality a core part of public sector, local government, and university workplaces. The Act now covers around 300 organisations and 450,000 employees.

We have built systems and tools to drive compliance and support cultural change. We’ve established Australia's most comprehensive public sector gender equality dataset. We have seen measurable progress in workplace equality.

Gender equality is no longer ‘optional’. It’s now seen as essential to effective, modern organisations in Victoria and beyond.
