Practical tips for implementing GIAs

We have released new gender impact assessment (GIA) factsheets. They give practical tips with industry-focused examples for:

These factsheets build on the GIA toolkit(opens in a new window).

Why GIAs matter

GIAs are a planning and assessment tool. They help organisations to evaluate how their work affects:

  • women
  • men
  • gender diverse people.

GIAs also help organisations understand how gender inequality combines with other factors, like:

  • cultural background
  • disability
  • age
  • sexuality.

GIAs help ensure better and fairer outcomes for everyone.

Organisations under the Gender Equality Act must apply GIAs to their policies, programs and services. They must also report on their progress doing GIAs.

Improving GIA capability in regional Victoria

The 2023 progress reports showed that some industries need more support. Rural and regional councils and hospitals had lower compliance than their metropolitan counterparts.

We appointed Right Lane Consulting to help understand why. They researched how councils and hospitals applied GIAs in practice.

The research found examples of good practice. It also highlighted distinct challenges, including:

  • limited access to training and support
  • fewer opportunities to collaborate and share learnings
  • diverse local community contexts, including cultural and economic factors.

The research also made recommendations for action by the Commission, councils and hospitals, and peak bodies.

As a result, we worked in consultation with regional health services and councils to develop these factsheets.
